Michelle Mason’s latest product ‘Egg’ - a ceramic candleholder, has been designed for the Hidden Art Select Collection. The Hidden Art Select Collection is an eclectic mix of interior products, which brings together good design, humour and style with functionality, and is retailed through the Hidden Art E-Shop.
Earlier this year, Michelle was invited by Hidden Art to submit a new product to a panel of experts for consideration for the debut Hidden Art Select collection. Hidden Art’s intention was to seek out exciting design combined with originality and market awareness. The Egg candleholder was selected and Michelle went on to work closely with the Hidden Art team to bring the design to market, with its launch at 100% Design 2007.
The Egg candleholder is designed to hold a standard 20 mm diam candle. It can also be used to hold a single flower head, bamboo stem or plant cutting.
The simple, familiar egg shape has been recreated in English fine bone china. The inspiration behind the candleholder concept comes from watching children dip toast into soft-boiled eggs; when the candle starts to drip wax it runs down the egg - in the same way that yolk drips over the shell of a boiled egg.
It is made in the UK from English fine bone china with a white glaze finish and comes packaged in recycled board. The Egg candleholder is sold as a pair - one in large: H15 x W10.5 x D12cms and the other in medium: H12 x W8 x D10cms.
Michelle successfully launched her debut collection of homewares in 2006. The first collection included Perspex laser-cut table lights and fabric lampshades. The Rowan Leaf range of lamps, lampshades and cushions has been featured on international television shows Fuji TV, Eikoku Seikatsu and British Satellite News and regularly feature in the press from Australian Home Beautiful to British Vogue.
Michelle’s bold graphic style and distinctive organic designs are inspired by repeating plant forms which now emblazon a new collection of canvas tote bags and cushions forming part of an exclusive range for the Royal Festival Hall. Michelle’s products sell through a variety of retailers including Midcentury Modern, The Newlyn Gallery, Cornwall, The Royal Festival Hall shop, The Hidden Art Shop and Moleta Munro in Edinburgh.
Michelle’s products are British made, many locally sourced, and all fabrics are unbleached cottons or natural linens. Michelle was awarded an Eco-certificate by Oliver Heath (BBC’s Changing Rooms) at Pulse 2007.
As well as developing her own collection, Michelle regularly undertakes comission work. A recently completed project was for the apartment-hotel company, Staying Cool, in Manchester, where Michelle worked with their interior designer to design and produce wall panels, lampshades and cushions for their suites. Internationally, Michelle is now working on a project with New York based Freddy & Ma to supply fabric/surface patterns for the company’s sought after handbag collections.
