Hidden Art Designer-Makers Forging Trends at SaloneSatellite 2008 Milan, April 16-21, 2008
Hidden Art designer-makers on stand at this year’s SaloneSatellite will further define the trend for stark lines and shadow play which made such an impact on the show last year. Without Hidden Art, a not-for-profit organisation supporting UK designer-makers, this inventive and idiosyncratic upcoming British-based collection would not get the lucrative opportunity to launch their work (and careers) during the Milan Furniture Fair.
2008 will mark the Hidden Art Select range’s Milan Launch, as the award winning Jeeves & Wooster lights are put on display.
For further information on the show visit the Hidden Art Events page.

This autumn sees the launch of Jocelyn Warner’s debut rug design. The ‘Bloom’ rug is in keeping with the botanical theme that is underlying in all of Jocelyn’s designs. Bloom features a single peony flower head that fills the entire rug. The design focuses on the formation of the folds of petals which transform into abstract lines. Eight shades of red from dusty pinks to deep crimson make up the Bloom which nestles in the centre of a sea of green leaves.

Tent London made its debut during the London Design Festival, receiving in excess of 18,000 visitors not bad for a brand new design event in London. The show presented over 300 exhibitors who covered every aspect of design; from vintage to modern, art and architecture, and a number of stops in between.
Home-grown talent was prevalent throughout the show from Sixixis, based in Cornwall to Angharad McLaren of Collide base in Shetland. Over seventeen countries exhibited with several designers and collectives from Italy, Japan, Holland, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Spain, Portugal and France.
The shows location in Brick Lane and its historic venue, the Truman Brewery, were an added bonus. The vast eleven-acre site welcomed visitors from all over the world. The design industry mingled with the public, curious locals and a few celebrities. Tent’s Friday night party was a hot ticket and quickly became over-subscribed, so plans for a bigger party will be put in place for Tent London 2008.

Naughtone have recently completed a commission for the BBC in Glasgow.
Their brief was to create a 'sofa system' for a new BBC Glasgow building situated on the banks of the river Clyde in Glasgow. The BBC were attracted to naughtone's Portion Sofa which was specified to fit all their restaurant areas in lavish configurations. They also required a sofa with a more upright seating position to be used in the Green rooms, VIP rooms and studios, so naughtone set about designing a sister to the Portion sofa, named 'The Clyde Sofa' system.
The Clyde sofa system is an official addition now to the naughtone range and will be shown publicly for the first time at Design Prima in May.

Hidden Art wins Blueprint award for Best Contribution to
100% Design, September 2005
Hidden Art's hard work over its eight outings at 100% Design has been rewarded with the 100% Design/Blueprint award for the Best Contribution to 100% Design in September 2005, cementing our reputation as a respected platform for designer-makers.
Our showcase included furniture, textiles, ceramics, lighting and interior products from 17 London-based designer-makers and two from Hidden Art Cornwall, a franchise of Hidden Art offering services to designer-makers in Cornwall.
The award is designed to reward the company that, in the opinion of the judges, made the most creative impact at 100% Design. The judges felt that Hidden Art summed up the spirit of 100% Design by celebrating the diverse work of emerging designers, while the stand was collectively outstanding with each product allowed to shine individually.
This is the first year that the graphic design was conceived and executed by Hidden Art’s own team. The concept was based on a jigsaw theme, where each designer-maker is represented by a unique jigsaw piece, fitting together to form a coherent whole. The designer-makers’ work was displayed to its fullest advantage with a simple yet elegant stand design by Marc Younger.
Dieneke Ferguson, chief executive of Hidden Art, said: “We see this award as public validation of the contribution Hidden Art makes to the design community. It is recognition of how far we have come since the first time we exhibited at 100% Design back in 1995, with the invaluable support of our funders and partners.”

The winner of the Design UK selection was Graeme Findlay
Here’s what Graeme says about his design.
“I was asked by IKEA to design new children’s furniture/accessories and toys for a future production run of 15-20 years. The design would be part of the new children’s PS range at IKEA. The product had to be original, safe, recyclable and of course fun.
My solution focused on an area that seemed limited, and as I discovered, neglected in the world of children - storage. Often storage is an area of tension between the adult and the child as it usually involves cleaning up after play. I wanted to create a fun storage solution for children. At the height of an average 4 year old the world is a different place. There are huge empty spaces under tables, behind sofas, under and over beds that we adults have long forgotten about. I wanted to exploit these hidden places and my solution would have to flexible enough to fill these “secret” places.”
The Makalös product is a gripper system allows children of varying age to easily attach belongings in an individual way. Items can be squeezed in between the flexible grippers. From small children of all abilities through to adulthood this storage solution can adapt as the storage needs of the individual change. Toys, clothes, shoes, books, mobile phones the solution can have a huge number of varied objects attached to it. From walls to ceilings the product can be mounted horizontally or vertically.
With the Makalös product, tidying up for the child now becomes a part of the play process.
The Makalös product can be found at the IKEA Stores. Please check the IKEA website, www.ikea.co.uk for your nearest store.

As well as looking after our 100% Design clients in September we also looked after the PR for Design UK Selection 2004. This was the second Design UK exhibition by Max Fraser and we are pleased to report the show was an overwhelming success.
We set up our PR-Girl press desk at Gainsborough Studios complex where the 4-day exhibition was held. We had a steady flow of visitors and press from all over the world. If you couldn’t make the show you can view a few snap shots on the Design UK client page.

All of our clients who exhibited at 100% Design in September had very successful shows. They are now busy following up enquiries from some leading retailers, so hopefully we will be announcing some new stockists very soon.
We now have 300pdi photographic images available from the Pad collection launched at 100% Design.

PR-Girl is for the second year running handling the PR for Max Fraser’s 100% Guaranteed exhibition, DESIGN UK Selection 2004.
Housed within the prestigious Gainsborough Studios development, situated in one of London's key creative districts between Islington and Shoreditch, Fraser will focus his 2004 show on the myriad of design talent that the UK can presently boast. Furniture, lighting, glass, ceramics, tableware, home accessories, and other interior goods from new and established names will grace the displays. A unique installation of furniture,
rug and cloth designs specially created by Ilse Crawford for UK manufacturers Christopher Farr and Ferrious will also be presented for the first time at the show.
Being the subjective nature of the content, visitors will inevitably favour certain objects over others. To highlight this diversity of human response, visitors will be asked to vote for their favourite item out of the 150 on display. The whole collection will be posted online and the winning product will be announced via an email dispatch after the show.
What is the reason for exclusively highlighting British design? It is no secret that Britain lies at the heart of creative talent and idea development in the world. The primary aim of the exhibition is to highlight this attribute to the domestic and international design audience that descends on London during this crucial period in the annual
design calendar.
A selection of smaller supporting shows has been bought in by Fraser to compliment the main exhibit:

Young Swedish Design 2004:
A chance to get a glimpse of Sweden's future design stars!
An exhibition showcasing furniture, lighting, textiles and glassware along with graphics and fashion from Sweden's best up-and-coming designers at Gainsborough Studios.

Stuff And Things:
The "Stuff And Things" exhibition at the Gainsborough Studios will feature new products ranges by Mibo and Fugg Design, with product launches from Leonhard Pfeifer, Corinna Warm and The Stretched Convention.
The "stuff and things" name came from describing the breadth of work the collective produces, ranging from furniture and domestic products to wallpaper and lighting.

New Designers:
A selective showcase of the best new graduates to emerge from UK design colleges in 2004, as handpicked by Max Fraser from the New Designers graduate exhibition at the Business Design Centre held in July 2004.
The above events are also part of 100% Guaranteed and the Icon Design Trail.
Further information and images are available from PR-Girl upon request.

PR-Girl has three clients exhibiting at 100% Design 2004. All three clients will be launching brand new ranges. Further details below …

Stand No. C51
A new addition to the PR-Girl client list, Pureform is headed by designer Stefan Bench. 100% Design is the companies debut show and they look set to capture everyone’s attention.
They are both a winner of a 100% Foundation award and a finalist for the 100% Design / Blueprint award within the ‘Best Newcomer section’.
The Tri Stool / Side Table was the chosen image to grace the front of much of 100% Designs pre-show literature. Pureform have also been invited to exhibit at the off-site event DESIGN UK Selection 2004.

Stand No. F100
This time last year Pad debuted at 100% Design. One year on and they are about to launch their new collection, which has been designed with Simon Pengelly. Although much of this sophisticated collection is being kept under-wraps until 100% Design, the few pieces that have been aired have received exceptional praise. One such product is the Pill Table.
There is something strikingly obvious about the Pill coffee table, a design constructed from a disc and a triangular wedge intersection of forms. Made by rotationally-moulding polyethylene in a cast aluminium tool
The simple nature of the form belies the complexity of the structure which uses the magazine rack feature to stiffen and rigidise the top surface preventing the otherwise inevitable sagging, while the integral moulded feet provide rigidity in the opposite direction, strengthening the structure across its thinnest point.
Despite the obvious playful nature of the design, Pill is extremely practical with easy to clean hygienic surfaces and A V-shaped moulded in magazine rack. For use inside and out, Pill has impressive proportions at 1075mm diametre together with carefully chosen radii to soften the appearance.
Also, the optional version containing two strip lights is a very effective light source for any space, designed to suit both domestic and contract interiors.
Jam Design have selected the Pill table as an iconic piece to be used in the Costa Coffee bar and Press Office at 100% Design. Max Fraser, author of Design UK has selected Pill for his exhibition, DESIGN UK selection 2004.

Stand No. E53
DAB Designs exhibited at 100% Moscow earlier this year and now Donald Alexander Baugh is preparing for his third year at 100% Design in London.
Donald Alexander Baugh’s reputation as a designer-maker has grown considerably in the last few years. His work has regularly graced the pages of consumer and trade press including Living Etc, House & Garden, Grand Design, The Telegraph, FX and New Design.
2004 sees Baugh turn his attention to introducing new materials to his collection such as acrylic and wire.
Alongside developing DAB Designs, his range of contemporary furniture, lighting and accessories, Baugh secures an increasing number of commissions for both private and corporate clients.
